“Okay,” Carl said, pacing back and forth on the dresser in Cinderella’s room, like a general getting ready for battle. “Things just got a lot more intense: Chris Toby, the person who caused you to bring me here in the first place, is now playing at your prom, in two nights. We gotta be ready.”

Cinderella laughed. “Well, what can we do? How can I get ready two days in advance?”

He turned to her. “First of all, you can definitely go, right?”

“Yes, my stepmom said I could, if I finish all my chores, which won’t be a problem. And, of course, I have to drive her there, because she’s gonna need a sober driver.”

“Wait—Barbara’s going to the prom?”

“Yes, she signed up to be a chaperone, of course. You don’t think she’d miss the chance to be next to someone famous again, do you? Who knows, she’s probably gonna try to dance with Chris.”

Carl shuddered. “Ew. That’s a thought I gotta get out of my brain.” He shook his head. “Okay, so now that we know you’re definitely allowed to go, let’s get to step two: what are you gonna wear?”

“What do you mean, what am I gonna wear?”

He stared at her. “I don’t think there was any ambiguity with that statement. I literally mean, what clothes are you gonna put on your body?”

Cinderella shrugged. “I don’t know, something from my closet, I guess.”

Carl narrowed his eyes. “Something from your closet? What do you mean, something from your closet?”

“I don’t think there was any ambiguity with that statement,” Cinderella said. “I literally mean—”

“You can’t wear something from your closet! You have to wear something nice, something extraordinary, something prom-worthy. Wait—have you ever even been to a dance before?”

“No.”

“No?”

“No, why would I have? I wasn’t even gonna go to this one, until it was announced Chris was gonna be there.”

Carl hopped down from the dresser and onto the carpet. “You weren’t gonna go? You mean to tell me you don’t have anything prepared for this dance at all?”

“No, I figured I would just pick something out from my closet.”

He stomped across the room and opened the closet door. “Just like I thought.” He climbed up a stack of shoe boxes, reaching to swipe through the clothes hanging on the coat hangers. “There’s nothing in here except old rock band t-shirts. Were these your dad’s?” He sniffed the shirts. “What are they, twenty years old? You can’t wear these, they smell like wet mushrooms!”

“No, there’s a dress in there, I think.” Cinderella pointed. “Look, right there, there’s a little black dress. I was gonna wear that.”

Carl pulled the dress off the hanger and showed it to her, revealing that there were several holes in it. As he stared at her, half a dozen moths flew out of it, fluttering up to the ceiling.

“Oh.” Cinderella watched the moths. “I guess I won’t be wearing that.”

“This is a disaster, a total disaster.” Carl tossed the black dress to the floor and rubbed his forehead. “Look, I come from a place called Elsentree, a literal fairy-tale princess land.
